Pain and Soreness
Different degrees of soreness and discomfort are to be expected after any sort of surgery. When it comes to oral surgery, the pain is usually located in the portion of the gum and jaw that was operated on as well as the surrounding area. The best way to address these side effects is to take recommended pain medications as directed and to get ample rest.
Post-Surgical Bleeding
A little bit of bleeding will occur after you've had dental implants placed. It is normal for this bleeding to last for roughly 24 hours after your oral surgery. If the bleeding lasts longer than 24 hours, be sure to get in contact with the practice so the issue can be addressed in a timely fashion.
Bruising and Swelling
Bruising and swelling are bound to occur after you have undergone a surgery. Discoloration is common along the area that has been operated on, and swelling can affect the gum tissue, the cheek area, and the lips. These side effects are temporary and you should notice improvement after two weeks of recovery. Cold compresses properly applied to the swollen area can be helpful for managing the swelling.
Issues with Speaking
Since you have undergone a surgery on part of the mouth, it will not be surprising that you might experience difficulty speaking or perhaps even a speech impediment of some kind. This will typically be a temporary issue, and will improve as you heal. When the final implant restoration is in place, you should no longer experience these issues with speech.
Post-Surgical Dietary Changes
Following dental implant surgery, it's a good idea to alter your diet to account for your needs as you recover. Typically this means eating foods that are soft and of room temperature. Avoid foods that are crunchy or have crumbs. Spicy foods should be avoided as well until the incision sites have fully healed.
Proper Oral Hygiene After Surgery
In those early days of healing, it's important to keep the mouth clean and sterile, especially around the incision sites. Saltwater rinses will typically be recommended 24 hours after your surgery. These rinses should occur two to three times a day, particularly after meals.
Follow All Post-Op Instructions to the Letter
The best way to reduce the severity of side effects and to avoid serious complications is to follow all instructions for post-op care to the letter. We will offer you full information on at-home care during the consultation process so you have a better idea of what to expect as part of this process.
